Poetry Girl On The Last Day Of January

January

Again I reply to the triple winds
          running chromatic fifths of derision
          outside my window:
                                          Play louder.
You will not succeed.  I am
          bound more to my sentences
the more you batter at me
          to follow you.
                               And the wind,
          as before, fingers perfectly
          its derisive music.
                               --William Carlos Williams

Winter Scene

          There is not a single
          leaf on the cherry tree:

          except when the jay
          plummets in, lights, and,

          in pure clarity, squalls:
          then every branch

          quivers and
          breaks out in blue leaves.
                               --A. R. Ammons

Laurie,
Thanks for the lovely sentiments. It is definitely hard when we lose these loved ones. I'm sure it will take my wife Lois sometime to get over this. She is still crying when she starts thinking about her dear friend.
I lost a dog once and I remember how sad I was at the time.
Thanx again.

Lovely. "If winter comes can spring be far behind?" I love Keats, too.

Ug! Your poetry postz make me soooo depressed when I'm stuck in writer's block! Arg! I will never be successful! Too lazzzy and exhausted!

(Ugh! Yes yes I mispelled a couple of words and deleted my own comment--must figure out way to delete comment without the tattle-tail announcement)

Oh Josh I totally know .....I read their words and how they put them together and I want to cry cuz I know I'll never be so good. BUT you have to remember that's what they thought too! (all great writers are completely pathetic in the confidence department)

What's weird for me is that I know it's important to read as much good poetry as possible but it depresses me (cuz it's good and they don't write like me)!! So then I don't read it as much as I should or write it either! Like I throw roadblock after roadblock in front of myself. ~:-(

You should know that I think about you more than any other blogger to keep me on track and posting fairly regularly--you are so steady and consistent in that department--so you are NOT lazzzzzy that we know. Plus your content Josh is consistently, consistently great! ...FUNNY (which means you're super smart), RELATABLE (look at me I lurrvv you and I'm a 48 year old suburban housewife mom! Omg I just totally depressed myself ...) very, very WELL-WRITTEN, and above all UNIQUE!!!!!! Your blog is so totally you. It's your fingerprint, no one else can write like you.

Frankly Josh I'm just as intimidated by you as I am inspired :-)

Go take a nap! You'll feel better when you're not so tired and then you'll write whatever it is that is waiting for you to write.

Aw! Stop making me leak salt water everywhere!

BINGO! That is the same issue I struggle with! I get so intimidating by other writers that I more or less avoid their work cuz it frustrates me that I'm not immediately able to write like Sexton or Plath or any of the writers, poets or novelists that I enjoy. I think I just need to stop thinking so much about the act of writing and instead, JUST WRITE. Hmm...
