I'm A Newbie

If you haven't noticed already, I'm brand-spanking new to blogging.  That said, you bloggers out there please feel free to offer me constructive pointers!  Like hello?--where's the Spell-Check??  And no Grammar-Check, either??? Uh-oh .......

And if I'm doing something I shouldn't be doing, or if I'm not doing something I should be doing, please send your advice.  I have to admit I'm still trying to wrap my head around an RSS feed ......THAT'S where I'm at!

So help!

You want advice?

Ok, here are my experiences:

(1) usually, you don't need to identify where you dropped in from - people move pretty freely between blogs (well, I do). I used to do that when I started, "I dropped in from xyz blog" - I don't anymore.

(2) Beware of the impulse to want to bare your soul. Some people have no problem with this and blog pretty personal stuff. Others do that and get embarrased a few days later and pull their posts. One of the great things about blogging is having visitors and commenters. It gives you a wonderful warm feeling and sense of intimacy.

(3) Never give out personally identifiable information. First names are ok (yeah, I'm Richard, the wife is Sofia and my kids are Tania and Jason). I prefer that to things like "poopy face" or "geriatric wonder". People have names, so use them.

(4) For spell checking, I write in Word and the copy and paste into Blogger, or, rather, I used to. Now I run my own site and use Microsoft Live Writer. It is a free download and comes with spell checker. It can interface to Blogger. It makes a lot of things dead simple, you compose your post much like in Word and when done, you hit publish and it gets uploaded to your blog. It handles images nicely (lets you put a little watermark on it).

(5) Visit, visit, visit other blogs, just randomly drop in.

(6) Have fun, never feel pressured. If you miss a day, or a week, or 6 months, so what? Just blog as normal, don't think you need to make up for missed posts.

Duh, never occured to me to write posts and comments outside Blogger. Can't wait to try Live Writer ....

Other comments dead on too. Will keep all in mind. Thanks so much for taking the time Richard.
